My name is Brook Miles, and this blog will be focused on my activities as a software developer, as well as computing in general, hardware and other generally technical things.
I began teaching myself how to program C++ in 1995 while attending high-school. Between 1999 and 2010 I worked at 3 different software companies: Sonicity, a Silicon Valley dot-com which burst with the bubble; Replicon, a strong and growing privately owned company in Calgary; and Electronic Arts in both Vancouver and Burnaby. All of these jobs were a result of referrals from friends I had met on IRC; Sonicity even went as far as to interview and hire me on an IRC channel. I’ve also spent some time on an indie project with some folks to whom I was introduced via a chain of Twitter re-tweets from local people I had never met or talked to.
In 2011 I joined Klei Entertainment, whom I had had my eye on for some time. I ultimately interviewed there after a friend (who I met on IRC, and also referred me to EA), referred me after offering a glowing review of his own interview there. Social networking can be fun, but remember kids: I’m a professional. Don’t try this at home.
I have written software for DOS, Windows 3.1, 9x, NT, 2000, XP, Vista and 7, FreeBSD, Linux, Pocket PC aka. Windows Mobile, Xbox 360, XNA, and PS3. I’ve shipped software for PCs, hand-held devices, web browsers, and game consoles. I code primarily in C/C++ or C#. I’m also familiar with Flash and various scripting languages.
